Hours of Service – Combining

This tutorial describes how to properly combine times on your log book or timesheet under the Hours of Service regulations in Canada. This works for all the provinces and territories.

This is useful if you are following a route with lots of short stops to load or unload followed by a short drive to the next site.

  1. The tutorial is “property-based” deliveries. Would the same combining apply to “passenger-based pickups and drops (i.e. a school run or a passenger charter within 1 single municipality)?

In Canadian legislation there is no difference between property and passenger based requirements for HoS. Usually passenger based pickups as you describe would be considered Driving duty status though. The driver is still in care and control of the vehicle. The only passenger exception might be for disabled passengers where the driver gets out to assist them.
